Heatwaves and homelessness; where to go for help

Heatwaves and #homelessness in Victoria; where to go for help Click To Tweet

Heatwaves can be an unpleasant time for many of us. But for those experiencing homelessness, heatwaves are not only deeply unpleasant, they have the capacity to be deadly.

Local governments across Victoria often put measures in place to support those experiencing homelessness during extreme weather events. These supports may come with eligibility restrictions so make sure to make contact with your local government beforehand.

The City of Melbourne has confirmed that this year it will continue to hand out free pool and movie passes to people experiencing homelessness on days of extreme heat.  The Salvation Army’s Hamodava Café will also be opened as an overnight respite service in the event of a extreme heat.  Details of these programs can be found in the City of Melbourne’s Heatwaves and Homelessness action plan below.

As we become aware of more responses to extreme weather from other local governments, we will continue to update this blog.

If you know of any Victorian extreme-heat services for people experiencing homeless that you would like to see added to this page, please contact lanie@chp.org.au or belinda@chp.org.au
