On 1 November 2013, the final report for the Service Sector Reform Project, ‘Service Sector Reform: A roadmap for community and human services reform’ was released. Annual General Meeting and Parity launch by John Falzon

The Minister for Social Services – closing address to the National Housing Conference, Adelaide

Optus community grants

Optus Community Grants are now open. Grants provide up to $10,000 in funding towards projects to help vulnerable youth. In order to apply you need to be a registered non-for-profit organisation. For more information click here.

Victorian Women’s Governance Scholarship Program

The Victorian Women’s Governance Scholarships are a joint initiative of the Victorian Government and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The program is aimed at increasing the knowledge, skills and confidence of Victorian women to enable them to join private, public and community sector boards and to effectively contribute as a Director. It is anticipated that benefits may also flow to participating community and not-for-profit organisations through better governance practices.

WIRE AMICA free gym program for women

AMICA has been given limited places for eligible women to join a gym. Eligibility includes women struggling with housing, who are interested in exercises together in a small group and are struggling to afford a gym membership. This membership is for an 8 week program at the YMCA gym, 1 hour free training per week on Thursdays from 11am-12pm, with a female trainer. Places are limited. Graduate courses in Housing management and policy

Applications are now open for the 2014 intake of Swinburne University’s graduate certificate and graduate diploma in Housing management and policy. These courses provide participants with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of the social housing sector, improve career development opportunities and use their workplace knowledge to gain an accredited university housing qualification.

Participants from DHS-funded organisations will receive a 75 per cent tuition reimbursement and time off work to attend the face-to-face components of the course. Participants must have a minimum of five years’ relevant professional experience or a relevant degree.

Moreland Solar City Project – workshop for practitioners – low income programs

This practitioner forum focuses on programs to improve energy efficiency in the home for those on a low income. It will present an array of perspectives in the field and will provide an opportunity for participants to collaborate via workshops. The venue for this forum is the Van Ray Centre at CERES. Launch of the October: Local Government and Homelessness edition

Dr Andrea Sharam, Research Fellow, Institute for Social Research, Swinburne University will launch the October edition of Parity. Keynote speakers include Felicity Prance, Project Officer, Centre for Housing, Urban and Regional Planning (CHURP), University of Adelaide and co-author ‘The Role of Local Government in Addressing Homelessness’ Research Report, followed by a panel discussion with local government experts.

Peer Education Support Program (PESP) Update

PESP, busy, as usual!

  • 22 Oct Spike participated in a panel discussion for an event organised by the City of Yarra; One Sleep From the Streets
  • 24 Oct Allan and Peter travelled to Warnambool to present the Understanding Homelessness training session and deliver a presentation to the AGM for Brophy Youth and Family Services
  • 25 Oct Giulia participated in CHP’s interview panel for a new Media and Communications officer
  • 29 Oct Spike participated in the CBD Network working group
  • 31 Oct Peter and spike attended the Mental Health Peer Support conference
  • 31 Oct Allan participated in the Homeground planning day for the outreach program
