Train the trainer: Become a Housing First trainer

10.02.21

Council to Homeless Persons is supporting Homelessness Australia to develop and roll out Housing First training across Australia. A new “train the trainer” program offers practitioners the chance to develop the skills and methodologies to deliver Housing First training across Australia. Expressions of interest are now open.

Housing First training project

Homelessness Australia is launching a “train the trainer” project, which aims to expand the Australian Specialist Homelessness Sector’s (SHS) capacity to deliver Housing First programs.

There is strong evidence that Housing First programs end homelessness for most people who have experienced long-term homelessness and have high or complex needs.

Funded by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, this project will provide quality training to practitioners in the skills and methodologies required to deliver Housing First training across the country.

Train the trainer course: What’s included?

The Housing First train the trainer course is led by internationally trained Australian Housing First practice leaders, and will upskill 30 advanced practitioners to become specialised Housing First trainers within the SHS and allied services.

The course will be conducted online via a series of workshops, learning activities, and showcases. Content includes:

An introduction to Housing First

Australian Housing First principles

Barriers to delivering Housing First effectively

Delivering Housing First training to different audiences

Training theory

Housing First practice

Housing First and wider strategy

The course will be delivered one day a week across six weeks, with two groups of 15 participants.

Expressions of interest now open

Homelessness Australia is welcoming expressions of interest from advanced practitioners, working in enthusiastic and supportive services, to be trained to provide Housing First training across Australia.

Homelessness Australia is looking to partner with organisations that:

are committed to Housing First programs

have a strong track record of Housing First program delivery

have an outstanding, passionate Housing First practitioner who can also commit to this project.

Organisations will need to be prepared to release their participating staff member on full pay to participate in the project.

Applications close on Monday 1 March 2021.
